Father’s Day Gifts for Every DIY-er

By Rach DePaoli | Inspiration

It can be difficult to decide what to give someone as a gift, especially when it comes to your parents. Parents usually ask for something practical the older you get – whereas, while you were a kid, something as simple as a personalized hand-drawn picture was more than enough to get them elated. So, what do you do now that you’re older and are unsure of what to get your dad for Father’s Day? This year, remind your dad how much you love him by making a DIY gift, throwing him back to the times you were a little kid.

First things first, what does your father like? Is he a coffee drinker? Then you could make an image or a quote to put onto a mug. Does he like to drink? Create coasters for him with each of your family members' faces on them. Is he sentimental and known for his writing? Create a DIY card. No matter what you decide the direction is, creating a DIY Father’s Day gift is simple with BeFunky’s Designer.

DIY Father's Day Gift Ideas for Every Ability Level

I know DIY gifts can deter some of you who believe you don't have the gift of craftiness. That’s why we’ve created a helpful list of easy DIYs for every ability. You will find that some of them use BeFunky’s Designer, while others will use the Collage Maker

For the Beginner DIY-er

You don’t have to be experienced in order to be a DIY-er. Try any of these easy, beginner-friendly projects below.

Customize a Card Template

The easiest DIY is to create your own card. If even that sounds daunting, with BeFunky’s Designer, there are hundreds of pre-designed Father’s Day card templates to choose from. All you have to do is pick one and sign your name. If you wanted to make it more personal, you could exchange the greeting with one of your own or even change the front graphic with an image of you and your father.

Create a Collage

If you want to increase the difficulty, while keeping it beginner friendly, you can make a DIY collage of all of the memories you have of you and your father. Easily make one of these with Befunky’s Collage Maker! Simply upload, and then drag and drop your images into each cell, print it out, and you’re good to go.

Design an Art Piece With Graphics

If you are making a Father’s Day gift with your kids for your husband, you could create some art pieces with your kids. Get some paint in the colors that match your home decor. Have each of your kids either stamp their hand or foot on a piece of paper. Once this dries, you can scan them into the computer and use the Cutout tool to rearrange them on a single piece of paper to print out as a framed design piece.

For the Experienced DIY-er

If you are more experienced in the realm of DIY, try your hand at any of these projects.

Put Together an IOU Book

Use the Collage Maker to create a little book of “IOU” coupons that your father (or husband, if you’re doing this with your kids!) can redeem at any time over the next year. These can be things like “Redeem for 1 Father-Daughter Date: I pay.”, or “Redeem for 1 Lawn Mow.” You can have a lot of fun with this and even get together with your siblings to create an even bigger coupon book for him. To keep it simple, print the pages out, cut the coupons out, give each a hole punch in the top corner, and simply put a ring through it.

Assemble a Sentimental Photo Album

If you are someone who takes a lot of photos, put them to good use by printing them up and buying an old school photo album to put them into. Most of the time, we keep everything digital, but there is something special about printing the images out and having them in a physical place. This would be a great gift if your father ins’t technically savvy. You can always send the photos to a place that creates photo books, but I think there is something extra special about putting your own photo album together. You can even make it more sentimental if you have little trinkets or receipts from over the years and turn it into more of a scrap book.

For the Advanced DIY-er

So, you’ve been doing DIY for a while now – take it a step further and try one of these DIY’s deigned for the pro.

Make Personalized Mugs or Coasters

Use your photos to create a special DIY mug or coaster. These might be more experienced because you will have to create the design, save the file, and then send it off to another company to get the project printed on an item, but these gifts are often the one’s that get used the most often.

A really cool idea is to use one of BeFunky’s photo effects and place it in a polaroid design. You can then either create a single image and place it on a mug or create several of these and use the files to create a fun and personalized coaster set.

Add a Message to Your Gift

Another idea for the advanced DIY-er is to personalize a bought item with text. Let’s say you purchase a nice cologne for your father. You can create a sweet typographic message in white text, export it as a PNG so the background is transparent, send it into a company to print it on vinyl so that you can peel it off and stick it on the back of the cologne bottle. Anytime your father uses it, he can see your sweet message.

Design an Illustrated Book

This last project is not for the faint of heart. You can make an illustrated book and create a story about your dad and you, or your husband and your kids. This will mean that you need to write a story and then separate the story, pairing each section with an illustration. You can either hire someone to make the illustrations for you, or you can do them yourself. After you get these illustrations, you will put each page together, exporting them in PDF format until you have all of the pages finished. Then, send them to a printer for them to assemble into a book! Then, you will have your very own children’s story for your dad to read together.
