Have you ever come across a photo where the person(s) or objects in the photo looked great, but the photo’s background kept it from being an out of this world photo? If you have, then I’m here to show you how to add an amazing background to a photo that will make it both Instagram and Facebook worthy.
First, you need to find a photo that is in dire need of a new background. I chose a friend’s photo that looked amazing, but needed some background pizazz.
You’re going to upload your photo into the BeFunky Photo Editor just like I did with my photo.
Next, you’re going to go to the textures panel, select paper then paper 7 and change the blend mode to subtract. This texture gives the photo a nice blue watercolor effect and a great base to build our background on.
You don’t want your whole photo to be blue, so you’re going to erase the areas that you don’t want to be blue.
The blue background looks great, but it’s time to add a little more to it. I felt like putting stripes on top of the blue background and that gave me the idea of creating a background with a retro Americana feel to it. Nothing says retro Americana like some sunburst stripes. Go to the effect panel, select sunburst then sunburst 2 and adjust the sliders to your liking. I colored my stripes pink, because I wanted them to match some of the colors in the photo and I wanted them to look like faded red flag stripes.
Don’t forget to erase the stripes from important areas.
A retro Americana look is not complete without some stars. Go to the textures panel, select paint then paint 5 and play around with the blend mode until the stars look right to you. I used hard light in my photo, because it brought just the right amount of stars into focus and it added a faded and grungy effect that went well with my theme.
Once you erase the star effect from your subject matter, your photo should look like this.
You can leave your photo like it is, or you can go a little further and add a vintage effect to the photo like I did. Go to the effect panel, select vintage colors then vintage colors 2 and adjust the slider to whatever number that will give you the vintage look you want. I settled on 70.00.
Now you should have a photo with an amazing background that makes you think of the U.S. flag, faded denim jeans, and all things Americana.
