Pinterest is one of those social media channels that is saturated with food bloggers, food writers, and food photographers. This is wonderful, of course. I love food; food is what I do.

Pinterest is THE place to go for recipes and inspiration…

But even the most confident of writers and foodies can feel discouraged when faced with the competitive nature of social media. It really is necessary to market oneself and to learn what works on the various social media channels—they are not all created equally and they do not all have the same audiences. Pinterest is THE place to go for recipes, so here are a few tips to help you stand out from the crowd so go create those beautiful pins now and get your recipe pinned!

1. Take Step-By-Step Photos

This is huge on Pinterest. I think people feel comforted when they can actually see what they are getting into rather than just reading an obscure list of ingredients. Pictures of the ingredients and the process make it seem doable. Now don’t over-do it here. No close up shots of raw, sliced chicken, please.

2. Adapt Your Style

It is perfectly fine to adapt your style to suit the various social media channels and to cater to their respective audiences. For example, I keep my photos simple on my blog—For the most part, I stay away from borders, text overlays, etc… but on Pinterest, I have learned that my photo and title are my only chance to grab the attention of a prospective pinner.

If I have a gorgeous, not too complicated arrangement of photos combined with a catchy title, or a sweet graphic of my recipe, I am much more likely to get pinned than with just one simple photo.

3. Create A Vertical Pin Of Your Recipe

Pinterest organizes images vertically, as you can see on the grid; Your eyes go straight to my Mini King Cakes vertical pin, don’t they?! Even though it is surrounded by other great photographs, the vertical pin with a funky bright yellow background makes the whole pin stand out.

4. Use Keywords

The use of keywords is essential to getting your recipes pinned and to gain followers. If you happen to make a recipe that falls into some of the trending categories, take advantage and advertise it as such!

There are plenty of buzz words flying around Pinterest, and even with the most gorgeous photo, it is hard to get a recipe to take off if it doesn’t contain certain keywords. This stir fry recipe is a great example. It is a recipe made with some of my favorite ingredients, and it just so happens to be paleo, gluten-free, vegetarian, low carb, and low fat—but most importantly to me, it is fast, delicious, inexpensive, and healthy.

5. If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again:

Sometimes one pin might not be enough, create two different pins for the same recipe using different key words, and pin them at different times to different boards. (this is when having extra photos might come in handy!)

Portobello Stir Fry with Cauliflower Rice

Serves 2-4
Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

5 large Portobello mushroom caps, gills removed and sliced
1 inch chunk of fresh ginger, peeled and julienned
3 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
5 green onions, sliced thinly on a bias
1 or 2 red fresno chili peppers, ribs and seeds removed and finely sliced
3 tablespoons gluten-free soy sauce
2 tablespoons dry sherry
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons arrowroot powder (if you are not strict paleo you can use corn starch here)
2 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons coconut or vegetable oil
1 head of cauliflower

Cauliflower Rice Instructions

To prepare stir fry:

  1. Mix soy sauce, sherry, water, and arrowroot in a bowl or measuring cup and set aside.
  2. Heat two tablespoons coconut oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushroom slices and cook for about 5 minutes on each side until they are soft and golden brown.
  3. Add ginger, garlic, and peppers and cook for about a minute.
  4. Add soy sauce mixture to skillet, stir and cook until sauce becomes thick and glossy.
  5. Stir in green onions and serve over cauliflower rice.
