It all started with old family photos. Two years ago, Winter Chavez had the idea that she could restore old black and white photos and breathe new life into them by adding color. With the help of an online Facebook group called Teach Me To Color and BeFunky’s Photo Editor, she taught herself how to recolor her photos and transform them into dynamic new images. The results were impressive, so much that she was asked to teach her techniques to others. Thus, her online educational program for restoring and recoloring photos began.

“My dream is to help others and teach them something they will love, further inspiring them to help even more people preserve the memories of their ancestors.”

Together with a community of other educators, Chavez creates online lesson plans and provides in-depth video tutorials on how to recolor and restore old photos. BeFunky’s Photo Editor was recommended to her by a colleague, and since discovering the extensive photo editing tools it puts at her fingertips, it has become a favorite photo editing program she uses to help others reanimate their photographs. She even created several YouTube videos showcasing her BeFunky retouching process. The results from start to finish are night and day. As she adds shading, color, and depth to each photo, they come alive. The YouTube video below is just one example of the powerful effects she creates with BeFunky:

I enjoy how extensive BeFunky’s photo effects are and that you can add them to your favorites list – it allows quick access to the effects you use most often.”

Black and white portraits are one of Chavez’ specialties. She uses BeFunky’s palette of Touch Up tools and photo effects to add drama, color and new life to each image. After uploading her photos into the Photo Editor, she then adds digital makeup to create a complexion, applies the Hair Color tool to add highlights and uses the Eye Color tool to evoke realism. The result is a dull photo transformed into a colorful, yet realistic, representation of her creativity.

“What I love most is that BeFunky is stocked with wonderful features that allow you to be creative in your own way.”

This creative process works on landscapes too. Teach Me To Color educator, Jennifer Robbins-Collins, demonstrates this with the image below. Using the Paint tool and Touch Up tools, she turns black and white scenery into realistic, colorful masterpieces. She is able to achieve these impressive results without spending too much time or effort either. She makes sure all of the tools she uses and photo editing techniques she teaches are user-friendly and simple enough for her students to master.

Educators like Winter Chavez and Jennifer Robbins-Collins are able to not only use BeFunky to implement their creative vision for their own works, but also use it to teach their students how to awaken their own creativity in restoring and recoloring photos. Some of their students have even realized their artistic eye because of programs like Teach Me To Color, and the progression in their abilities and creative confidence has been made possible because of BeFunky!
