There’s nothing quite like playing your music for a live audience. All of the practicing you’ve done and the hard work of booking venues culminates into a huge adrenaline rush as you walk out on stage. However, there’s nothing more discouraging than walking out to an almost-empty room. With barely anyone there to hear your music, it can seem like a waste of time and energy.
Before you start doubting your talents, consider that just like any type of business, selling concert tickets requires a bit of marketing effort. Whether you’re a professional musician or your band is just getting started, concert promotion is essential to your show being packed with people ready to hear you play!
There are a many ways to promote your upcoming show, and concert flyers are an old school (yet still powerful!) marketing tool that you want to have in your mix. It used to be that bands would have to hire a graphic designer to create promotional materials like this, but luckily BeFunky’s Flyer Maker can help you design some seriously awesome concert flyers and spread the word about your next show! No design skills necessary. We’ll show you how!
What Makes An Eye-Catching Concert Flyer
More often than not, you’ll find that concert flyers end up competing with several other flyers for local concerts, workshops, and events. Whether you post them on a wall, telephone post, or place them on the countertop at your favorite coffee shop (with permission, of course!), there are bound to be other posters and flyers taking up precious ad space. Still, there are several ways you can draw more eyes to yours. Here are our favorite design tips:
Use Bold Colors
Eyes are naturally drawn to bright, bold colors and imagery. With concert flyers especially, it’s hard to go overboard with color. If the branding of your band is particularly colorful, feel free to go crazy with a concert flyer that follows suit.
If your band is more moody and you find yourself resisting bright colors in your flyer design, that’s fine too. Think about incorporating a bright color into the text portions of the design rather than using color throughout. That’ll still make your flyer stand out!
Use Large Text For Important Information
If the most important details of your event can’t be seen from ten feet away, your copy is too small. You’ll want the really important information (like your band name and date of your show) to be the largest text in your flyer design.
Other information like the address of the venue and opening acts can be smaller, but definitely still need to be seen from a distance. Keep in mind the fact that you’re trying to catch the attention of people passing by and you only have a split second to do so, and your copy should reflect that.
Use High-Quality Imagery
When thinking about an image to use in your concert flyer design, make sure you use a relevant image that best reflects you or your band. This could be an image from your most recent photo session, an action shot from a show, or your album cover.
If you want to really create a unique look for your images, try adding some effects from BeFunky’s Photo Editor! You can easily turn photos to art, cartoons, or add filters to really make your images pop.
How To Create A Concert Flyer With BeFunky’s Flyer Maker
Now that you know the secrets to success when it comes to designing concert flyers, it’s time to put them into practice! With your design ideas in mind, head to BeFunky’s Flyer Maker and choose your favorite template from the selection.
With your favorite template loaded, head to the Image Manager tab (the top icon in the left menu) and upload a photo to use in your flyer design by clicking on the Computer button. This will allow you to search the files on your computer to find your best band photos. You’ll see that your uploaded images will appear as thumbnails in the Image Manager. Click on the image you want to use and drag it over the existing photo in the flyer template. When the existing photo turns opaque, drop your new image and it will become the new background for your design.
If you’d like to make any edits to your photo before you start adding text to your flyer, click on the image in the template. An Image Properties toolbar will appear, where you can add a color overlay, crop images, or open your image in BeFunky’s Photo Editor. When you click on the Open Image In Editor button, you get seamless access to hundreds of effects and filters to make your photo stand out. Here, we used the Paint Brush tool to create a bold backdrop for some of our text. When you’re finished with your edits, just click the flyer thumbnail to the left of your photo and you’ll be directed back to the Flyer Maker with your edits in tow.
Next, update the text to reflect your band name and concert details. Clicking on any textbox within your template will allow you to type new copy. You’ll notice that any time you click on a textbox, a Text Properties toolbar will appear to allow you to change the font, colors, opacity, and more! Play around with different fonts and colors until you get your flyer looking just right. You can also click and drag textboxes to relocate them anywhere on your flyer template.
To add some eye-catching graphics, click on the Design Elements tab in the menu on the left (the triangle symbol). You’ll find tons of free graphics to use in your flyer design. When you find one you like, click on it to add the graphic to the template.
You can use the blue circles around your graphics to resize and rotate them. You’ll also find that a Graphic Properties toolbar appears any time you have a graphic selected. You can use it to change the color of the graphic, opacity, and more!
When you’ve got your concert flyer looking perfect, click the Save button at the top of the Flyer Maker. You can choose a destination on your computer for saving your concert flyer from the dropdown menu.
We also recommend choosing the Save As Project option, which will save your concert flyer in editable format. This way, you can edit it at a later date to update details or use it as a template for future shows.
Tips For Promoting Your Concert
Now that you’ve designed the perfect flyer to promote your show, it’s time to get them printed and distributed to some key places where you’ll find fans. Your local coffee shops, college campuses, and music stores are a great place to start.
In addition to promoting your concert with a flyer, it’s a great idea to create a mix of marketing efforts to sell those tickets. If your band has active social media channels (a must!), using these to spread the word is essential. Luckily, you’ll find tons of social media templates for Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook in BeFunky’s Designer and they’re as easy to customize as our Flyer Maker templates! Start designing some social media posts as a next step and plan out when to schedule them.
