Sometimes it’s hard to capture the true essence of an object on camera. Particularly, something shiny like a sparkly piece of jewelry or a gleaming light source. Unless you have the fanciest camera on the planet, objects like these tend to fall a little flat or blur important details together when an image is captured. This can be increasingly frustrating if those details are critical to the overall photo, like when you’re trying to capture product photography and the shininess is a selling point.

The camera lens captures all that it can, but for those sparkly details that get left behind, the Glow tool in our Photo Editor is here to save the day! Whether you’re wanting to put the bling back into an image of a diamond ring, highlight the shiny paint job on your car, or make anything look as glinty and glowy as it does in real life, we’ll show you how to enhance it all. Let’s get started, shall we?

When To Use The Glow Tool

The nature of the Glow tool is to brighten the highlights in your image to naturally make shiny objects appear even shinier. It will add glowiness to any type of photography, but the best images to use with this tool are ones where shimmer and shine are important to the overall look. Here are some of those instances:

Add Bling To Product Photography

Since the Glow tool is designed to make objects look shiny, it’s superb at enhancing certain types of product photography. Specifically, jewelry. If you’ve ever taken a photo of a gemstone ring and found it to be lacking in the bling department, using the Glow tool will make all the difference.

Just look at the details that are added back to those otherwise dull diamonds.

Make Light Sources Look Radiant

If you’ve ever tried to take photos of a neon sign or city at night, you know that it looks a million times more glowy in real life. The cool thing is, the Glow tool can fix those types of images and recreate the radiant details your camera didn’t capture!

You can add as much or as little glow as you want, so you have total control over how bright you want your light sources to appear.

Highlight The Shine

Whether it’s the paint job on your car, the ornaments on your Christmas tree, or any object that you want to make shinier in your image, the Glow tool has your back.

Whatever kinds of images you’re enhancing, the Glow tool can add that extra bit of intrigue and highlight the important details. We’ll show you how easy it is!

How To Enhance A Photo With The Glow Tool

Ready to bring out the shiny details in your image? If so, head to BeFunky’s Photo Editor and upload an image by clicking the Open button at the top of the Photo Editor or dragging-and-dropping an image right into the interface. Once it’s uploaded, click on Glow from the list of tools in the Edit menu on the left. In this particular image, you can tell that these earrings should be very shiny in real life (just look at all the diamonds and gems!), but the image makes the sparkly details fall flat. We’ll show you how the Glow tool can restore the shine.

Once you’re in the Glow tool menu, you’ll notice a few different options for customizing the effect. They all work in tandem to create a completely customized effect, so keep in mind that finding a balance between them all is key. First, adjusting the Amount slider will increase or decrease the overall amount of glow you’re adding to the image. More will make the effects and any changes you make to the other sliders more apparent, while less will make the effects subtle. You can adjust this slider at any time during the editing process.

The Glow tool is so smart that it’ll only focus on the highlights in your image, which in this case are where the light bounces off the gems. Increasing the Glow Size slider will create a larger area of glow around those targeted areas, while increasing the Glint Size slider will add more dramatic bling and cross-light over the targeted areas. Play around with these sliders and the Amount slider to make the effect look natural. In this case, we found that increasing the Glow Size and Glint size while decreasing the Amount makes it look like the light is bouncing off the gemstones naturally.

The Tolerance slider at the bottom of the menu helps regulate the area that the Glow effect is applied to. Increasing the slider to 100% will apply the effect to the entire image as a whole, while decreasing it to around 50% or so will keep the effect more focused to the areas of the image that have the most highlights. Remember that all of the sliders in the Glow tool menu work together in tandem, so it will take some practice to find the best balance between them all.

You can even customize the Tint of the Glow effect if you want! At the bottom of the Glow tool menu, click on the box next to Tint and select any color you wish using the Color Picker menu. We’ve chosen a white tint to make the jewelry pop against the pink background, but you can choose any color that works well with your own image or keep the tint transparent for a more natural look.

If you want a more dramatic amount of Glow added to your image, you can click the Intense button at the top of the Glow tool menu. This will intensify the effect, and you can adjust the sliders correspondingly to create a more powerful Glow Size and Glint Size.

You can also use the Glow tool in Paint Mode by clicking the Paint tab next to Adjust at the top of the Glow tool menu. Paint Mode makes it possible to use the Glow tool selectively, giving you more focused control over your photo! After adjusting the Brush Size, Brush Hardness, and Brush Strength, you can click and drag with your mouse to remove the Glow effect from certain parts of your photo. Since the gemstones in our image were already super shiny, we used Paint Mode to remove the effect from only those areas of the image, keeping the look realistic and more balanced with the shiny diamonds.

After you’ve found the perfect balance of Glow for your image, click the blue checkmark to apply all of your edits. From here you can keep on editing with more tools, or click the Save button at the top of the Photo Editor. In the Save menu, you can choose a destination for saving your image or sharing directly to your social media channels. If you’re not quite finished, but are running low on time, the Save As Project option is perfect for you! It allows you to save the image in editable format, so you can come back to it at a later time and pick right back up where you left off in the editing process.
