Ah, the good old Valentine’s Days spent in the classroom. When you’re a kid, it’s one of the best days of the year! There’s no pressure to get a date, plan an evening, or buy a bouquet of flowers for that special someone. Instead, it’s all about crafting a carefully decorated box to keep all the candy and cards from your schoolmates and making sure you don’t buy the same Valentine’s cards as anyone else (because that would be embarrassing)!

Fortunately, with a little BeFunky magic, you can totally prevent such an embarrassment! When you create DIY Valentine’s Day cards for schoolmates, they’ll always be unique and they’ll cost even less than a pack of generic store-bought cards. Whether you’re a crafty parent or a kid wanting to get creative with your cards this year, we can help you make DIY Valentines for everyone on the class list in just a few simple steps! Let’s get started, shall we?

Step 1: Create A DIY Valentine’s Day Card Design

The best Valentine’s Day cards for kids are short, sweet, and to the point. Just think of a few one-liners that would be perfectly witty and head to BeFunky’s Designer to start getting creative. Once you’re there, click on Blank Templates at the bottom of the Templates tab and select the Event Graphics category. You’ll find a blank template for a 7 x 5 card to use in your design.

Next, there are two ways you can edit the background of your card. The first is to navigate to the Customize tab and select a new color for your background using the colored tiles. The color tile with the dropdown menu will allow you to select any color of the rainbow (and then some!).

The second is to add a graphic from the Design Elements tab, which comes in handy if you want a border around your Valentine. In our design, we’ve added a square graphic to the top of the template and resized it by dragging the blue circles around it. If you hold down the Shift key while resizing, the aspect ratio of your shape will unlock, allowing you to manipulate it. Whenever you have a graphic selected, you can use the Graphic Properties menu that appears to change the Color, Opacity, Blend Mode, and more!

Once you’ve got the background looking just right, it’s time to add that witty Valentine’s Day message! Click on the Text tab (the ‘T’ icon) to add a textbox to your template. Double click the textbox and start typing your message. You can customize the Font, Font Color, Size, and more using the Text Properties toolbar that appears whenever a textbox is selected.

To really drive your Valentine’s Day saying home and make your card look extra-awesome, click on the Design Elements tab (the triangle symbol). You’ll find tons of free graphics, stickers, and illustrations to use in your Valentine design. When you find one you like, click on its thumbnail to add it to your card.

Don’t be afraid to combine graphics to create new shapes. In our design, we’ve combined a circle graphic with a triangle to create a whoopie cushion! You can click and drag any of the elements on your template to reposition them, and use the blue circles around the objects to resize them. You’ll also see a Graphic Properties toolbar appear when you’ve got a graphic on your template selected. This toolbar will help you change the color, opacity, and more!

When you’ve got your Valentine looking perfect, use the Save button at the top of the Designer to save the design to your Computer. We also recommend using the Save As Project feature to save your design in an editable format, just in case you want to change things without having to start from scratch.

Step 2: Repeat For Variety

Since there’s more than one kid in the classroom to exchange Valentines with, it’s a really good idea to have more than one design to hand out. Typically, the Valentines Day card packs you get at the store have multiple designs so there are options for which card to give each classmate. Using the steps above, design a few more Valentines. A really quick way to create a variety of Valentines is to simply change the color scheme and text:

Once you’ve completed each design, use the Save button at the top of the Designer to save each design to your Computer. Save them all in one place, like a special Valentine’s Day Card file you can access for the next step!

Step 3: Create A Collage Of Your Valentine’s Day Card Designs

Now that you’ve got your DIY Valentines completed in digital form, it’s time to organize them into a sheet that you can print! Using the dropdown menu in the upper left corner of the Designer, you can easily navigate to BeFunky’s Collage Maker without even having to open a new browser window.

Once you’re in the Collage Maker, click on the Layouts tab to find a collage layout that you can arrange your Valentines on. We recommend one of the layouts from the Grid category that will accommodate as many designs as will fit on an 8 x 11 sheet of paper.

Next, click on the Image Manager (the first icon) in the left sidebar menu. Click the Computer button to select the Valentine’s Day Card image files you just created and you’ll see each one appear as a thumbnail. Drag and drop each one into a cell into your collage.

After you have all your collage cells filled, it’s time to resize the collage for printing. Click on the Settings menu in the left sidebar and type in the dimensions for a standard 8.5 x 11 piece of paper (2550 pixels by 3300 pixels) in the Width and Height boxes. You should now have a print-ready sheet of Valentine’s Day cards to fill out!

Step 4: Print And Prepare Your Cards

After clicking on the Save button at the top of the Collage Maker, you’ll have a file that’s print-ready and perfectly sized for the piece of paper you’re printing on. If you have it available, try printing your sheet of cards on cardstock paper so they’re thicker than standard printing paper. This will make the Valentines look oh so professional.
