Women around the world rejoiced when Hollywood’s A-listers made the ‘no-makeup’ look on-trend. However, while it might look great in person, the barely-there makeup effect doesn’t always translate well in photographs. You see, subjects are often left looking washed-out no matter how perfect their complexion, which is why even the barely-there makeup models have makeup artists behind the scenes to enhance the look.
Rather than suggesting that you or your model pack on the makeup, we’ve actually got something else in mind – digital makeup, that is! BeFunky’s Touch Up tools make it easy to add any amount of makeup digitally, whether you want a subtle glow or a full-on glam look. Keep reading to find out our favorite tools of the trade, as well as how you can achieve these desired effects with your own photos!
Just like real-life bronzer, our Bronzer tool highlights the cheekbones for a beautifully radiant, yet sculpted look. To begin, simply select Bronzer from the Touch Up tab on the left (you’ll find it in the Skin section). You’ll see that there’s heaps of elements to modify here (if you wish), including Color Palette, Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness.
Start by choosing your Bronzer color. You can either choose a pre-selected color straight from the palette or click on the first tile to bring up the color chart and select your own. If there’s a shade in your photo that you’d love to use, simply select the Eye Dropper Tool, before clicking on your desired shade in your image.
You can then fine-tune the Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness by adjusting the slider under each option. Sliding to the right increases the effect (or size of the brush), whereas sliding to the left will decrease these. We recommend adjusting your Brush Size to be proportional to the cheeks in your image, as well as decreasing the Brush Hardness to about 50% so that the edges blend well as the Bronzer is applied. Less Brush Hardness means softer edges, which helps mimic the look of real-life Bronzer application.
Begin applying the Bronzer effect to your photo by clicking and dragging to brush it along your subject’s cheekbones. Once you’re happy with the results, click the blue checkmark to apply.
Even the most subtle hint of blush can give someone a flattering, rosy glow that makes their cheeks pop. Replicate this look in your photo by selecting Blush from our Touch Up Tools (it’s underneath Bronzer). Similarly with the Bronzer effect, you can use the corresponding sliders in the Blush tool menu to adjust Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness.
There are heaps of popular Blush color presets to choose from under Color Palette, and the best way to choose which color will be best suited for you is to apply the blush and switch between each tile. Sweep your brush on your subject’s cheeks, slightly above where you placed the Bronzer.
Keep in mind that you can adjust the Strength slider for the Blush tool after you’ve painted on the color. This way, you have total control over how subtle or bold the look will be. When it looks perfect, just hit the blue checkmark button to apply the effect.
Just like real mascara, the Mascara in our Touch Up Tools enhances the subject’s eyelashes, making them appear bolder. You’ll find the effect in the Eyes section of our Touch Up menu. While it’s automatically set to black (for extra boldness), you can still adjust settings including Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness. Zoom in to the eyes in your image, adjust the settings accordingly, and you’re ready to paint the Mascara over the lashes.
The Mascara tool is so intuitive, it will only apply itself to the lashes and hair follicles in your image. Since it can sense where hair follicles are, it also works beautifully on eyebrows! If you’re wanting bolder brows, try enhancing them with the Mascara tool by swiping over them.
Hello, bold lashes and brows!
If there’s one way to draw attention to your pout, it’s with lipstick! Our Lipstick tool comes in every color of the rainbow and even includes some popular presets. Just locate Lipstick in the Touch Up Tools (it’s in the Mouth section) and select your desired color or choose one from our color chart. We’ve selected a muted coral for a subtle enhancement, but you can go as bold as you want with color on this one.
Then, once you’ve adjusted your Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness settings, use your mouse to apply the effect to your subject’s lips.
Happy with your results? Just click the blue checkmark to apply it.
Our 5th most favorite Touch Up Tool is the Eyebrow Pencil, as it can instantly make your subject’s eyebrows appear fuller. Locate the Eyebrow Pencil in the Eyes section of the Touch Up Tools and get ready for bolder brows! Just like the other effects, you can select a preset color, choose one from the color wheel, or use the Eye Dropper Tool to match it perfectly to the current color of their eyebrows.
Adjust the accompanying settings for Strength, Brush Size, and Brush Hardness using the sliders, paint your effect on, and voila! Those brows are now on point. Click the blue checkmark button to apply your desired look.
Once you’re happy with your digital make-up job, it’s time to save your image. Simply click on Save at the top of your screen. From here, you have the option of saving your image straight to your Computer, as well as Facebook, Dropbox, and more. If you want to come back to your photo at a later date (i.e. to add some more digital make-up to it or continue on your photo editing journey with other tools), then we also recommend the Save as Project option, which lets you save it as a BeFunky Project file to your BeFunky account or Computer.
