What Makes A Good Watermark

A good photo watermark is simple, quickly interpreted, and on-brand with your business. Just like an artist would sign their masterpiece, a watermark is meant to distinguish your photos from the rest. There are three basic design routes to go when creating a watermark; it can be your logo, business name, or website URL. Here are a few different examples:

A Logo

If you’ve already established a logo for your business, it will make the perfect watermark for your photos. Simply position your logo wherever is the least distracting, tweak the opacity, and you’re good to go.

A Name

If your own personal name or business name is more recognizable than your logo, it’s perfectly good to use as a watermark. All you need to do is keep the font and color scheme on brand and establish it as your stamp of approval.

A Website URL

If you’re the owner of a blog or your business is more web driven, consider using your website URL as your watermark. This way, whenever someone comes across your image and sees your web address, it’ll be easy to follow the watermark back to your work. Hello, increased website traffic!

Once you’ve decided which watermark design you want to create, the rest is super easy. We’ll show you how to design a photo watermark with BeFunky that you can use on every single image you save!

How to Design a Watermark in BeFunky

To create a photo watermark, we’ll first need to create a transparent background to design it on. To do so, head to BeFunky’s Photo Editor and upload any image.

Then, click on the Background tool in the Edit menu on the left and watch the entire image become a transparent background. Click the blue checkmark to apply it.

Next, we’ll need to size the transparent background down to the ideal watermark size, about 200px wide. In the Edit tab, select the Crop tool and type 200px into the Width box and any size between 100-200px into the Height box, depending on the shape of your watermark. Since ours will end up being a square canvas, we went with 200px x 200px, but if you’re using a single line watermark like a name or web address, it’s best to size the canvas to 200px x 100px. When you’re finished typing, press the Enter button on your keyboard to resize the canvas, then press the blue checkmark button to apply it.

With your transparent canvas perfectly sized, it’s time to design your watermark. Here are a few different ways to design:

Creating a Logo Watermark

If you’ve already got a logo, click the Image Manager tab and upload your logo by dragging and dropping it into the Image Manager panel or selecting the Computer button and finding the file. When it’s uploaded to the Image Manager, it will appear as a thumbnail. Simply click the logo thumbnail and select Add As Layer to add it onto your transparent background.

Use the blue circles around the logo to resize it so that it fits to the edges of the transparent canvas, then press the Flatten Layers button in the bottom left corner of the Photo Editor. Finally, click the Save button at the top of the Photo Editor and select the .PNG option to keep the transparent background intact.

Creating A Watermark From Scratch

BeFunky has everything you need to design your watermark from scratch with graphics, text, and more! To add text for your watermark, click on the Text tab and select the Add Text button. A textbox will appear for you to type, then you can use the Text Properties menu that appears to change the font, styling, letter spacing, color, and so much more! For this watermark, we chose the Chinese symbol for ‘dumpling’ and simply copied and pasted it into a text box, but you can choose any font or wording that is unique to your company.

Next, you can feel free to add graphics to your watermark by clicking on the Graphics tab in the menu on the left. Click Search Graphics and type in your search query to find the perfect graphics that will compliment your watermark design. While there are so many options in the Graphics panel for circles, we wanted our design to incorporate a circle that wasn’t perfectly round, so using the text tool and finding a font with the type of ‘O’ we wanted was a great option for this! Feel free to experiment with a combination of graphics and text for your perfect watermark look.

When you’re finished designing, it’s important to make sure that the logo you create fills up the entire transparent canvas with minimal room around the border. To quickly resize the elements of your watermark, hold the COMMAND/CTRL key on your keyboard while selecting each layer. This will allow you to select every object in your design. Then, drag the blue circles around your group of objects to increase the size and reposition the watermark on your transparent background.
